On Saturday, September 26, from 10 a.m. to noon, Jonathan A. Noyalas (Hugh & Virginia McCormick Chair in Civil War History at Shenandoah University and Director of SU’s McCormick Civil War Institute) will sign copies of his latest book, Winchester and the Civil War: A Walk Through History (Reedy Press) at the Winchester-Frederick County Visitors Center.
The book, which contains eighty stops in Winchester’s downtown area, reveals much about the complexities of life for Winchester’s inhabitants (Unionists, Confederates, enslaved people, and free Black people).
Lincoln Prize-winning historian Jonathan W. White praised the book, noting that Noyalas’s gift as a “talented storyteller” will “treat” those who read this book and follow the five different tours in it “to a time-traveling experience as they step back into the past to experience the Civil War in one of America’s most contested places.”
