Daniel Morgan lived his last few years of his life in Winchester, Virginia. He was many things during his lifetime – frontiersman, wagoner, patriot, farmer, businessman, miller, Revolutionary War hero, and U.S. Congressman. However, he deserves to the remembered the most for being one of the American combat leaders during the Revolutionary War – an excellent tactician, superb leader of men, and outstanding light infantry commander.
The Norton home, later known as the Daniel Morgan house, was built around 1786. General Morgan purchased the house in 1800 and moved in with his wife Abigail, daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and James Heard. He was in declining health and wanted to be near his doctor, Dr. Daniel Conrad and minister, Reverend William Hill. He built the northwestern side of the present structure. Morgan died on July 6, 1802, in one of the upstairs bedrooms.
